Here’s the good news: the story of funding for LGBTIQ+ communities in Australia doesn’t have to be a sad one! With so many community organisations doing important and needed work, and groups like The Channel here to help we’re on our way to equality for all.

Whether you’re an LGBTIQ+ community group in need of funding, an individual wanting to know what you can do to make a difference, or a funding institution seeking to better understand and address LGBTIQ+ community needs - below are things you can do TODAY to grow the pot of gold under the rainbow.

COMMUNITY GROUPS

If you represent an LGBTIQ+ collective, not-for-profit or charity in need of funding, start by:

Signing up to giveOUTday AU

For the first time ever in 2019, giveOUTday is coming to Australia. It’s a national day of giving to LGBTIQ+ communities and there’s all sorts of ways you can get involved: use the online donation platform, benefit from matched funding, raise awareness for your work and/or run an event on the day. GiveNow is a no-cost online donations platform, which will make accepting donations and managing your fundraising campaigns easy.

INDIVIDUAL SUPPORTERS

If you are an individual who wants to donate to an LGBTIQ+ issue and make a difference, start by:

SIGNING UP AS A MEMBER OF THE CHANNEL

The Channel is a collective giving vehicle for LGBTIQ+ communities. Give with others, have your say as to where the funds go and see the impact of giving together. Memberships start at just $25 per month and 100% of your donation goes to the community.

DONATING TO A PROJECT ON OR BEFORE GIVEOUTDAY AU

There’s a whole suite of amazing LGBTIQ+ community projects ready to be supported at giveoutday.org.au AND The Channel will match your donation dollar for dollar from now until the day itself >> 18th April 2019.

Setting up a monthly donation to an LGBTIQ+ cause on GiveNow

Regular donations give LGBTIQ+ organisations some much needed financial security, and help them plan ahead. GiveNow hosts a number of LGBTIQ+ groups which you can choose to donate to.

GETTING INFORMED ON THE ISSUES and opportunities

JOY 94.9’s The Informer has a great daily LGBTIQ+ news segment covering all the top community topics. Tune in or listen to bite-sized podcasts here.

Sign up to Equality Australia’s newsletter to get in-real-time email blasts as they battle it out in the courts, combatting the ongoing human rights abuses of LGBTIQ+ communities in Australia.

GETTING IN TOUCH WITH THE CHANNEL

We’re here to help you navigate the LGBTIQ+ community sector. We can assist you to find LGBTIQ+ funding opportunities that fit well with your guidelines and criteria, and advise on best practice.

MAKING IT CLEAR YOU’RE LGBTIQ+ FRIENDLY

Often, LGBTIQ+ groups may not apply because they’re not sure if they will be welcome. Consider putting a statement on your website or in your granting information to the effect of: “Applications from eligible LGBTIQ+ organisations are encouraged.

GETTING INFORMED ON THE ISSUES and opportunities
